On 3rd December we had a site visit from the surveyor appointed by Refit West – Matt – and two others from his team. He spent a couple of hours here talking to us and looking at the house. The other two measured up every bit of living space we had to feed into the report. Matt’s visit was useful in that it helped us to think through what we would and wouldn’t contemplate. I was vehemently against anything that would make our rooms any smaller – 200 year old cottages are small and dark enough without shrinking them by 3ins on each wall! That effectively ruled out any internal solution so it shortened the work in thinking about solutions.
We were pleased that during his inspection he spotted a potential cause of some damp in our bathroom that had been driving us insane for months! We also found out that the double glazed windows that we had put into the back of the house only 10 years ago would no longer meet current building regs, and our condensing bolier (same age) could be replaced by one which was more efficient. But Matt also said that embedded energy and minimal improvements meant that these should only be done when current life spans are completed.
