In 2007 we bought our 3-bed semi in central Bristol. It’s a 1975 rebuild of a house which was originally built in around 1890. Not a scrap of the original house remains but the current layout is broadly the same as it would have been We have uninsulated cavity walls, icy cold solid floors, a barely insulated loft and UPVC double glazing that we think dates back to around 1990 (as does the gas boiler). Not a highly rated house in environmental terms, ample scope for improvement!
In 2009 we started to plan an extension and at the same time a major refurbishment of the house. Architects and planning permission took a while, but now in May 2010 we’re almost ready for the builders to move in. By the end of the year we’re hoping to have a bigger house with vastly improved energy ratings.
