Slow progress – Bishopston June 2010 Update

It’s now mid-June. We’ve identified the energy-saving components that we’d like to fit and we’re in the process of getting quotes from builders, specialist installers and suppliers.

As you can see from our energy performance certificate, things could be a lot worse but still we’ve got plenty of scope for improvement. Energy Performance Certificate (before we start work)

Here’s what we’re planning to include:

  • High quality double-glazed and triple-glazed windows
  • Underfloor heating in the kitchen (radiators in other rooms)
  • Underfloor insulation in the ground-floor hallways
  • Roof insulation that goes well beyond the minimum required by building regulations
  • External wall insulation (cladding)
  • A new efficient gas boiler and a large well-insulated hot water tank
  • Solar hot water panels (facing West; unfortunately we have no South-facing roof)
  • A high degree of air-tightness (ie. draft-proofing) and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
  • Large capacity rainwater storage system (this will be an above-ground low cost DIY solution, rainwater will be used for the garden and our downstairs loo)

Most of the above are must-haves for us, but in a couple of cases we still have to decide based on questions of practicality and cost. I’ll be sharing all the details in this blog.
