Bespoke have yet to figure out why all their rendering cracked. it’s been over 5 weeks since we noticed the cracks. Nothing has been done about it and Bespoke have more-or-less ground to a halt on the rest of the…
Accoya timber – sustainable softwood that lasts for 50+ years?
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 12. May, 2011 in Bishopston: three bed semi
We wanted to use timber for the decorative roof-line trim on our gable-ends. A few other houses in the street have replaced their rotted timber with uPVC, which looks terrible and doesn’t score highly in sustainability terms. We wanted to…
Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MHVR)
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 11. May, 2011 in Bishopston: three bed semi
We decided to install Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MHVR). This is a whole house ventilation system which will gently suck damp smelly air from the kitchen and bathrooms and push clean fresh air into the bedrooms and living room.…
External wall insulation
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 11. May, 2011 in Bishopston: three bed semi
We’re now part-way through installing external wall insulation. This has been a learning process for myself and Bespoke Builders, neither of us had previous experience of this.
The first step is to fix the insulation baords…
February Update
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 28. Feb, 2011 in Bishopston: three bed semi
Our builders started about a month ago. Everything is dust, wet and mess at the moment, with lots of old bits of the house going out and lots of new bits being built. This could be quite depressing to live…

September Update
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 23. Sep, 2010 in Bishopston: three bed semi
Unfortunately there’s not a lot more to say since June. We selected two builders to quote for the main construction phase of the house – one eventually decided not to quote and we’re trying to evaluate the other quote with…
Slow progress – Bishopston June 2010 Update
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 18. Jun, 2010 in Bishopston: three bed semi
It’s now mid-June. We’ve identified the energy-saving components that we’d like to fit and we’re in the process of getting quotes from builders, specialist installers and suppliers.

Not a scrap of the original house remains
by Gavin Spittlehouse on 17. Jun, 2010 in Bishopston: three bed semi
In 2007 we bought our 3-bed semi in central Bristol. It’s a 1975 rebuild of a house which was originally built in around 1890. Not a scrap of the original house remains but the current layout is broadly the same…
